Where's the Meat?

 

Ivor Catt will give a lecture "The Catt Anomaly" to the Cambridge University Engineering Society on Thursday November 15, 2001. The lecture will be at 6.30pm in Room LR4 in Cambridge University Engineering Department, Trumpington Street, Cambridge CB2 1PZ +44 (0) 1223 332600. Every effort has been made to cause relevant Establishment Experts to speak at the lecture, both before and after Ivor Catt speaks.

The ruling ideology in Science, which I now accept, is that Electromagnetic Theory was settled in around 1905 [Note 1]. It follows that there has been nearly a century for its details to have been worked out and agreed. This includes the Transverse Electromagnetic (TEM) Wave.

"The Catt Question", http://www.ivorcatt.co.uk/cattq.htm , wrongly called "The Catt Anomaly", is a rudimentary question about the source of the negative electric charge which appears on surface of the lower conductor when a TEM wave travels in a vacuum, guided by two conductors.

This Question was asked in 1982 and regularly ever since. There are two contradictory answers given by experts and institutions. These are called the "Westerner" and the "Southerner" answers. This is followed by a total refusal to address the resulting problem. However, experts and institutions continue to pretend to "teach" electromagnetic theory.

There is a continuing refusal by experts and by relevant institutions to answer the Question, or to institute a process to address the Question, or to assert that there is no problem.

The precedent is of course Galileo, when the clerics were the scientists. However, in Galileo's case, the Establishment clerics (=scientists) asked the questions. Galileo did not ask questions of them. The damage inflicted on the Church was massive, and lasted for centuries. Our case will be different, and this time science will be saved, if a procedure can be developed to cause the Establishment Scientists (= clerics) to state their dogma. Ivor Catt has worked for two decades to create such a procedure, which has been resisted.

This assertion, that electromagnetic theory was complete in around 1900 and could not be improved upon, is frequently repeated, (for instance, as far as I remember, by Solymar and Ash). Since Heaviside (1850 - 1925) was given the first Faraday Medal and has never been repudiated by anyone in the Establishment, it is tragic that so many of his concepts, including that of energy current, have disappeared. They are now not known to a single Professor of Electrical Engineering or a single text book writer in the world. Their grasp of the Transverse Electromagnetic Wave diminishes every decade, even though it is the basic intellectual building block for digital electronics. - Ivor Catt, 31dec01

Background.

In the nineteenth century Oliver Heaviside formulated the concept of the Transverse Electromagnetic Wave to help him to send Morse pulses down the undersea coaxial cable between Newcastle and Denmark. It is now accepted Establishment theory. In Heaviside's time, it was not clear that electric charge had mass, so that the problem was not apparent. The success of wireless communication submerged the problem for a further half century, until the 1960s. A scaled down version of Heaviside's problem was then repeated when high speed logic pulses were delivered across the back plane of a computer. However, now, electricity had mass. Ivor Catt, who pioneered the interconnection of high speed logic, did not notice the problem for twenty years, until 1982.

talk would begin between 6 and 7pm. Most Engineering Society talks last for
about 40 minutes, and tend to be followed by 10 to 15 minutes of questions. Afterwards, there would be a buffet dinner when those who had attended the talk would be able to meet you informally.
The talk would be held in a lecture theatre equipped to project from a laptop computer, 35mm slides, a video cassette, or acetate foils. The Society would of course be willing to reimburse your travel expenses. I do hope that we can arrange this talk.

This kind of thing is not normally said to one who is going to give a lecture. Therefore I have to assume that it insinuates that my approach in the past to "The Catt Anomaly" has been unfortunate. (Oliver Lodge said to Heaviside, who a century before received the same treatment as I am now receiving, "he was his own worst enemy".) (Anyone who discusses future strategy with me is well advised to start by saying he has no evidence of my mishandling "The Catt Anomaly" in the past.)
It is not only Tindall who insinuates that my approach to "The Catt Anomaly" has been less than polite. This could have been interpreted as coming recently even from my co-author and co-researcher Malcolm Davidson, over dinner, who has worked in this field with me for thirty years. It has also come from Bernd Rosenheim.
As I said to Bernd, I set out on this exercise many years ago with the primary intent of demonstrating that my (mis)behaviour could not be a factor. That is why I never communicated with the main players - McEwan, Pepper, Mink, Secker etc. I never even chose them, leaving it to their organisations to choose their top experts. I waited for years to get the opportunity when I could cause their administrative bosses to instruct their top experts to comment in writing on "The Catt Anomaly". It is destructive for any of my so-called allies to write copy which can be interpreted as implying that my behaviour caused the problem. Further, their writing, e.g. Tindall above, attempts to draw the subject back into a technical ghetto. Tindall et al. seem intent on avoiding the fact that Pepper and McEwan refuse to discuss their differences on the fundamentals of electricity while both continue to earn salary teaching contradictory material. Further, many other accredited experts line up behind each of them (southerners and westerners) and teach contradictory material, either Pepper's view of McEwan's. The two parties never discuss or even admit their differences. I am not involved. It is destructive to see me as playing a role in this crisis, which is not a technical one. The book "The Catt Anomaly" is about a demonstration that the Enlightenment is over. Those who cannot face up to that idea will retreat into discussing Ivor Catt's personality (at predicted in "The Catt Anomaly" p1), which was specifically removed from the exercise in 1993, see "The Catt Anomaly" p4. When I finally did communicate with the main players on 31dec1999 (see "The Catt Anomaly" p57), I wrote; "Should Ivor Catt have approached the matter differently, and if so, how? How should he approach the matter now?", to which none of the twelve recipients replied. Now there is a risk that casual writing by my allies drives into into confusion possibly the most important scientific research of the twentieth century, research into the Scientific Reception System, not into electromagnetism. In the same way as research into the feeding habits of a certain animal entails the use of food, but is not research into food, so research into the Scientific Reception System entailed the used of electromagnetic theory, but it is not research into electromagnetic theory.
It is about something much more important; a major sea change in the history of civilisation; the end of the Enlightenment. See "The Catt Anomaly", p1; ".... the best scientific demonstration that the scientific Age of Reason is over, is to study the present status of the Catt Anomaly." Also see the subtitle of the book; "Science beyond the crossroads." The title does not mention electromagnetism. If "experts" continue to draw salary and suffer no accountability while continuing to teach contradictory fundamentals, while refusing to discuss their disagreement and also withholding from their students the information that two views exist, then we have entered new territory which is totally different from the Age of Enlightenment. I will not admire anyone who seeks to confuse what is happening, and what has been proven. What is required is a caveat at the begining of any advice to me on future conduct that the write has no evidence of my mishandling the matter in the past, or alternatively, a clear statement as to how it has been mishandled. "The Catt Anomaly" has been handled much more carefully and scientifically with these considerations in mind than any previous research into the scientific reception system. A research project which has lasted for decades must not be casually rubbished by carelessness. Incidentally, it has been noticeable that strategy advice during those decades has not been forthcoming, possibly because I am acknowledged to be the best strategist.

My view is that you have resolved the problem satisfactorily. Please bear in mind that this is an unprecedented situation, which is difficult for me to handle in the best way, as well as for everyone else. There is no set protocol.
"Please do not think that anyone is trying to stop the Catt Anomaly from being listened to; indeed, we are trying to ensure that a Cambridge audience gives it a fair hearing."
This pushes me into concern, since I see "The Catt Anomaly" as merely a vehicle for demonstrating the end of the Enlightenment. ("Experts" can easily disprove this assertion by contributing to the discussion of "The Catt Anomaly", but they will not. This is an open ended experiment on the Scientific Reception System.) This is a much bigger prize than promotion of any of my theories on electromagnetism, or the discovery of a flaw in classical electromagnetism. Thus, the refusal of "experts" to cooperate in any way is central to the central message of my lecture. It is important to not lose this message in the trivial clutter of discussing where some electric charge comes from. I do accept that any and everyone involved will be anxious to avoid the central thrust of the exercise, my showing that, since all professionals refuse to discuss the fundamentals their subject, or even to state them, the Enlightenment is over. This collapse results from our intellectual centre ground being controlled by professionals. The central message is too frightening to consider.

We believe that the presence of a financial incentive would prevent your talk from being perceived by students and staff here as a serious academic event. Dear Hayden,
I await your advice as to whether you cleared the matter of my offer of money to students who succeed in getting their lecturers to comment in writing on The Catt Anomaly before 15nov01. On recipt of that clearance, I planned to offer to each expert mentioned in the book "The Catt Anomaly"; Howie, Pepper etc., a fee for speaking briefly on 15nov01. I do not like to proceed with them until I know that my offer to students is agreed. I note that there remain only three weeks before 15nov01. I do not think it is reasonable to bounce those mentioned in the book at short notice. Thus, any further delay in clearing my offer to students should lead to postponement of my 15nov01 lecture. I have worked on this matter for decades, and feel that a further delay of a year or even five years would be better than to let 15nov01 go off at half cock. Although you appeared to give a golden opportunity for the saving of science by your invitation, I feel that another will arise in the next few years. p21 of "The Catt Anomaly" asserts that students will defend their lecturers rather than defend science. That assertion is now being tested. The prize is to demonstrate beyond reasonable doubt that no expert or institution will define, or even discuss, the electromagnetic theory that has supposedly been taught throughout the world for a century. Thus, classical electromagnetism does not exist. The bedrock on which most of science allegedly rests does not exist. This is not a matter to be dealt with lightly. A recent analysis of universities put Cambridge at the top in England. Cambridge, or the IEE or the IEEE, are the three institutions which can handle this matter. My recent lecture to Hertfordshire University recently is of little significance.
